General Description | |||
Perhaps one of the most beautiful oils ever produced. It forms much of Ayurvedic and other medicines in the Indian sub-continent. The tree grows to 70 years old and the essential oil is distilled from the heartwood of both stem and roots. The trees were normally replaced when cut, although for the last 20 years the government has banned cutting as this was not being done. The quality is subject to an AGMARK appellation and the oil has to conform to the standard. Only oil distilled in the Government distilleries has the right to be labelled as 'Mysore Sandalwood'. These distilleries are now closed, so that Indian Sandalwood is unobtainable. New sources are available from Vanuatu and New Caledonia | |||
