General Description
This is the 'old Lavender' that is still found growing wild by the roadsides in France. It is spindly and only grows in Eastern Europe as a crop. The plant is first mentioned by the Abbess Hildegard who lived in the 12th century. Reputedly named after the Latin Lavo 'to wash', there is not much evidence available to show that it was used a great deal by the Romans other than as a herb to put in the bath. Dioscorides in AD 79 mentions a near relative Lavandula stoechas that you tend to find in garden centres. Aromatherapy is almost totally based upon the accident the Gattefose had in his laboratory when his hand was burned and he plunged it into Lavender oil, the only thing handy. Its applications are many and it is the essential oil par excellence
